What is a Yawn, Why do we do it & Is it Contagious?

YAWNING, IS IT CONTAGIOUS
Everyday, people yawn. When they're tired, bored, stressed or over-worked. Usually a yawn lasts six seconds and increases the heart rate by 30%. It is said that a yawn is known to "cool" or "rest" the brain. They say our brain is like an overworked computer, and yawning "fans" it out or we would have a dysfunction. But, what causes a yawn?

First off, even bunnies, fish, cats, dogs...almost every animal yawns. After you yawn,

It feels
amazing

It isn't known why we actually yawn. There is nothing to prove why we do it or why it happens. The general reason we assume is pretty accurate but has no scientific proof.
Many scientists say it's a low level of oxygen
in your lungs in the alveoli of the lungs. They said when oxygen levels are low, our brain has a reaction and sends us a signal to yawn so we can 'increase' our oxygen level by 30%.
Today we know that yawning is a reflex of inhal
ation and exhalation that takes more oxygen into our bloodstream. People say yawning is contagious. Is it?

Researches said that people who look at pictures yawning or other people yawning causes 40-60% chance of them to yawn too. Even the word YAWN can make people yawn. (Did this make you yawn?) It doesn't really make sense saying it's
contagious but a reasoning could be that it's a result of an unconscious behavior

Yawning can be misunderstood. Saying that it's rude or that you're not interested. But that's not the case. Many greeks said that when you yawn you have to cover your mouth but why? So your soul doesn't escape your body.

What do you think about yawning?
What is your reason of why we do it?

Did this picture above make you yawn? ;) ^

  1. I yawned before I came to the post, but this picture did not make me yawn...

I think we yawn because we are tired, bored, or because we just woke up.

  4. I think the greeks said to cover your mouth when you yawn because people around you didn't want to smell you stinky breath when you exhaled the yawn.
And the yawn to "fan" our brain makes sense. I'm just still a litte confuzed on how the oxygen would t that.. Is it because the blood will carry more oxygen to the brain?

  5. I didn't yawn looking at the pictures. But, I agree with Em. I think we yawn as a natural reflex cause we're tired.

  6. I was always told that yawming was due to low oxygen in the lungs... I think that this is CAUSED by us being sleepy, so our tired lungs do not take as deep of breaths. But come on, greeks? escaping souls?

  7. We yawn because of the following things
    1) Boredom
    2) Boring stuff
    3) Tiredness that makes you bored
    4) etc.
If animals yawn, does that mean that dinosaurs yawn? lol

  8. Emma - I guess it can be both! :) I heard the same for that and for yawning. It's a possiblity.
Adelia - I believe that your blood does carry oxygen to your brains. Every blood cell has oxygen right?
Rihanna - Well, it's a myth that your souls could 'escape'. Yeah, it can be caused by us being sleepy. I believe so too.
Matt - 1) I agree. Like right now. I'm in class and I'm yawning. 2) I yawn everyday in school. Explains it. 3) School. 4) School.
Yes. Dinosaurs could of yawned. I saw a cute video of a panda sneezing. So it's possible.
