The pros and cons of marijuana smoking

(This post is by Danielle)

I have always heard that smoking marijuana is bad for you, yet some doctors prescribe patients marijuana for many medical reasons. I have done the research and found that there are many pros and cons to smoking marijuana. On the negative side, studies have shown that smoking marijuana can damage your brain, heart, lungs and immune system. It slows down learning and interferes with memory, awareness, and judgment. Smoking marijuana increases your risks of getting cancer because it puts cancer-causing compounds into your body, though evidence clearly shows that marijuana has been accepted as a relief to the distress of ill people, when used in a safe way under medical supervision. Researchers also say marijuana can relieve certain types of pain, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms caused by illnesses like multiple sclerosis, cancer and AIDS or by the harsh drugs sometimes used to treat them. Marijuana is less toxic than many of the drugs that physicians prescribe every day. Although people do believe that marijuana is a dangerous drug and that there are less dangerous medicines offering the same relief from pain and other medical symptoms. Another down side that comes along with smoking marijuana is the withdrawal effects that are similar to studies of nicotine withdrawal symptoms, such as craving for marijuana, sleep difficulty, and weight loss. It also affects your mental state of mind, causing some to suffer with aggression, anger, irritability, and strange dreams. Research also says unlike nicotine, alcohol and hard drugs, there are no clearly defined withdrawal symptoms when you stop using marijuana. Lester Grinspoon, an Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School states that "There is very little evidence that smoking marijuana as a means of taking it represents a significant health risk. Although cannabis has been smoked widely in Western countries for more than four decades, there have been no reported cases of lung cancer or emphysema attributed to marijuana. I suspect that a day's breathing in any city with poor air quality poses more of a threat than inhaling a day's dose -- which for many ailments is just a portion of a joint -- of marijuana."

Researcher Andrew Morral says “The people who are predisposed to use drugs and have the opportunity to use drugs are more likely than others to use both marijuana and harder drugs. Marijuana typically comes first because it is more available.” Meaning that some people can be in an environment where marijuana is very commonly used and abused and these people would be  more likely to smoke marijuana than others that are not exposed as much thus, giving them a greater motivation to do other drugs harsher than marijuana. On the other hand the SAMHSA (substance abuse and mental health services administration) says that “increases in the likelihood of cocaine and heroin use and drug dependence are also apparent for those who initiate use of marijuana at any later age” meaning that people that abuse the drug of marijuana in any way are more likely to do harsher drugs like cocaine and heroin at a later age. What do you think?

  1. Well there is a certain molecule in marijuana called cannabidiol that blocks the pain when one smokes it. My brother is currently apart of a research team that extracts this molecule from marijuana and I believe they are working on creating a drug out of that molecule. I believe there are several other universities that they speak with working on similar projects so do not be surprised if we get rid of medicinal marijuana and use this new drug instead in the coming years.

  2. I doubt medicinal marijuana would be completely phased out. At this point 77% of Americans support it. However, fully legalizing marijuana is a whole 'nother debate.

  3. Do people support medical marijuana because they think it's legitimate medicine? Or is this really a reflection of the fact that 1 in 2 Americans think marijuana should be legalized?

Interestingly, in the same study that found 77% of Americans support medical marijuana (as @Odunayo Kdizzle noted), they reported that only 31% of the country believes that medical marijuana is actually being used to "alleviate suffering from serious medical illness."

Is medical marijuana really just a loophole in the system that allows people to use an otherwise illegal drug?

  4. Marijuana’s effects run deeper than reducing ailments and producing euphoria in the user. As Danielle Ansley stated above, Marijuana damages the brain; but to what extent? According to researchers the chemicals in marijuana bind to neurons and impair there intercellular signalling. Scientists are not sure to the degree, however it is a fact that THC, the main cannabinoid chemical in marijuana, interacts with the hippocampus, a region of the brain that controls memory. Now, I’ve noticed that classmates of mine who smoke marijuana seem to struggle with retaining the concepts learned. This is a bold statement of course because it implies that marijuana suppresses the ability to learn; however if a drug MAY damage something as indispensable as ones memory then why take the risk? This is a topic that began to intrigue me recently; what do you all think?

  5. Heck, even during the prohibition era "Medicinal Whiskey" was sold in order to go through loopholes in the law. We are merely repeating history, and honestly the Marijuana debate has nothing to do with how damaging its effects are,(How is Marijuana a schedule 1 drug yet Cocaine is not? Had a friend OD on pot and he fell asleep. Had an uncle OD on Coke and he had a heart attack). Drink too much alcohol you will die. Smoke enough cigarettes and you will get cancer. Eat too many weed brownies and you freak out. If we really cared about public health why not eliminate alcohol and cigarettes along with marijuana? Why not even go further and ban Mcdonalds. Millions of people die from cardiovascular diseases each year. Outlaw cars. Thousands die in car crashes each year. Ban, Hammers. They can cause massive brain damage if you hit your head hard enough with one of them. It's not even like banning certain items creates an underground economy which fuels illegal cartels, allowing them to take advantage and have a complete monopoly. Everyone knows the Mafia during prohibition lost tons of money because it was illegal to sell alcohol, and because they were law abiding citizens they chose not to. I mean somehow making money through the black market because prices increase 100 fold because there are no legitimate competitors? Ridiculous. Sarcasm aside, the only legitimate reason I see for the continued criminalization of marijuana would be in concern of its overall impact of public health. Libertarianism is good...until the choices of some people start to affect everyone as a whole. If legalizing marijuana somehow made 40% of people a sudden burden to the state because of increased health issues, then I would not see a reason to legalize it. But if we are on a policy of keeping *dangerous* substances illegal, why don't we just keep ourselves internally consistent. Or maybe it's just that the tobacco and alcohol lobby want to keep marijuana illegal in order to keep more profits for themselves...Woops...too political. Is medical marijuana a loophole? Yes. I am inclined to believe that the majority of people that smoke medical marijuana don't even have any legitimate health problems. You even have guides on youtube on how to get a card by b.sing your illness. "Dr. I can't sleep...". "Here's a weed card!". Do I personally think there's a legitimate reason to keep it illegal? Nope. Does Marijuana lead to harder drugs? Yes. But don't forget breast milk. 100% of all heroin users started out drinking breast milk when they were children. Protect yourselves. Ban breast milk!

  6. This is actually intresting. Being raised around Jamaicans, I figured that weed was ok but in America, many see it as a negative thing. It just depends on the way you use it and how it affects you.

  7. To the first comment that's really interesting and I would like to see what is actually going to happened to medical marijuana and how the other drug is going to take its roll.
Although to the second comment I do agree that medical marijuana is very common and is very unlikely to phase out.
To Mr. Hammer I think that it could be both because many people do think that marijuana should be legalized but think about the people that actually need it and do use it the correct way. For example the sicknesses or diseases they might have
To AnthonyTB I think that the people that take the risk in smoking marijuana really don't care about the side affects that it may have for them. For example your classmate, maybe he or she really just wants to smoke marijuana for the fun of it and isn't really aware of the side effects that it might have there could be many reasons. But for the people that use marijuana for the right reasons... I don't really have an answer to why they may be taking the risk of losing one's memory. It could be because of the pain.
To Oduanyo I totally agree with what you were saying. Your comment is actually very interesting and the facts that you listed were things you probably wouldn't even think of! :)
To ajhenery123 you’re totally right. In Jamaica especially, marijuana is very very popular and if you were to live there you probably wouldn't even know it could do a lot of damage. It just depends on how you use it and how it affects you, like you said.
