Biology and Boxing

Have you ever wondered why boxers wear gloves when fighting in matches? Why this happens or that happens? (yeah, fill in the question yourself). That, my friend, is what this blog will talk about (perhaps).

Boxing is actually related to Biology because of the various effects it causes to the human body. Short-term effects that happen instantly like blood flying out with sweat when taking a strong punch, or long-term effects like diseases with weird long names (e.g. dementia pugilistica).

This all starts with the strong hook or jab the boxer gives out with his gloves on. (click me for more info) The gloves is worn not to protect the opponent from the punch, but to protect the hands and knuckles of the puncher. Without it, we would see a lot more of broken hands in boxing matches. Also, the boxing gloves add more force to the punch, making it hurt more in the long-run. The gloves add more weight to the punch, and this causes the brain to slam against the skull when taking one. This could lead to a severe brain dysfunction in the future.

But what does this have to do with biology? The human body is composed of 70% water, and we know that vibrations travel fast in solid and liquid (dolphins use this to communicate). With the boxing gloves, the punches taken causes vibrations to travel through the body. The stronger the force and impact from the punch, the more it hurts. And what happens next is what was explained in the previous paragraph.

Boxing also risks the life of the fighters. (click me and me) There are cases where the boxers die in the ring when taking heavy and strong punches to the head. Like explained, the gloves add more weight for the brain to slam against the skull and can cause swelling and internal bleeding in the brain.

Biology is the study of life, and boxing involves the risks and dangers this sport introduces to human life. Even though boxing is a great sport, it still is violent and can cause severe damage to the human body.
