Above are nutriton labels for 3 different sports drinks that i got from http://www.dietfacts.com/ all 3 drinks are designed for you to drink during physical activity, so which one is healthier,? i analyzed the data and here are my findings. Gatorade has 20 calories per 8 fl oz, 5g of carbs fom sugar, 0g of fat or protien. Powerade has 50 cal per 8 fl oz, 14 g sugar, and no grams of fat or protien. vitamin water has 50 calories, 13g of sugar and again no fat or protien. In all cases you are basically getting your calories or energy from sugar and nothing else. The nutriton from theese drinks is almost identical the healthiest is the Gatorade and only because its G2 if you want the most nutrients drink powerade. after concluding my studies i found that many drinks claim to be healthier than the "competition" but they are in fact the very same.

Shenaya Barlow Food Label Assignment (No Color)
I chose 3 products at random from the
cabinets located in my house. These 3 products were Instant Lunch Chicken
Flavor by Maruchan, French Style Green Beans by Libby’s and Cream of Mushrooms
Soup by Campbell’s. Actually taking the time to look at the food label has taught/showed
me a lot. It taught me that just because something says “0 grams trans-fat”
that doesn’t mean that it has absolutely no fat in it. I’ve also learned that
food companies try to trick you into thinking their products are healthy by
lowering the numbers they put in the Nutrition Facts. While that may be
misleading it is indeed legal.
Serving sizes listed on food labels
aren’t as realistic as you think. For example one of my products was French
Style Green Beans by Libby’s. The serving size of the food label is 120g.
That’s only for ½ cup. Many companies try to trick you into thinking that the
serving size is lower than it actually is , that way you’d buy it and consider
it “healthy”. The serving size of Maruchans’ Instant lunch Chicken Flavor is 64g
per container. Which means it’s less fattening than French Style Green Beans by
Libby’s whose serving size is 120mL for only ½ the cup. The difference in the
serving sizes help to explain their nutritional values. All the claims on the
label do not refer to the nutritional content. The ones that don’t refer to the
nutritional content refer to where the food was made and how to get in contact
with the manufacturers. I found it misleading that on the Maruchan Instant
Lunch Chicken Flavor is states that there is 0 grams trans-fat, which makes it
seem as though the food is fat free you would think? When in all actuality it
has a percentage of 12g total fat which is 18% and 30% saturated fat. My
calculations of the total amount of calories in these products support what the
product claims. The Instant Lunch
clearly states 0 grams trans-fat but that doesn’t mean there’s no fat in it at
all. The predominant ingredient in the Instant Lunch is Enriched Wheat Flour.
In the French Style Greens Beans the predominant ingredient is Green Beans.
Last but not least the predominant ingredient in Campbells Cream of Mushroom
Soup is water. Food labels list ingredients from greatest to least. The
ingredients they used the most is the first one they put under ingredients and the
one they use the least is last. All this just shows that you can’t believe
everything you see or read. Because if you don’t read carefully you may want
something under 300 calories for a 2,000 calorie diet and the label may say 290
but keep in mind if that counts for 1 serving size or ½ of the serving size.
Out of all 3 of the ingredients I have chosen I would have to say that
Maruchans Instant Lunch was the healthiest because it has iron which shows that
it is high in its nutrition values while the other 2 products don’t. I would also have to say that the most
“unhealthiest” out of my 3 products would be The Cream Of Mushroom Soup by
Campbells because it has no calcium, iron , Vitamin A or Vitamin C.

After reviewing the food labels on the following items -- Beef Broth (Shop Rite), Cap'n Crunch (Quaker Oats co.), and Ridges Chips (Wise) -- I was able note the nutritional values of these foods. the Beef Broth was in full 2 servings. In all it had 40 calories, 910 mg of sodium, and 4 gram of protein. My calculations game me these results as percentages; 0% cal from fat, 0% cal from carbohydrates, and 4% cal from protein. After comparing this to the other items, it turned out that Beef Broth has the least vitamins/nutrients, the least %cal form fat and carbohydrates, but the most %cal from protein.
Now for the second item, Cap'n Crunch. In all, there were 14 servings in the item's container. It consisted of 1400 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, 1 gram of saturated fat, 190 mg of sodium, 22 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of dietary fiber, and 1 gram of protein. After calculating the percentages, I got the percent of calories from fat, carbohydrates and protein. The calories from fat was .009%. The calories from carbohydrates was .06%. Finally the calories from protein were .002%. After comparing these results with the other items, I determined that Cap'n Crunch has the 2nd most calories from fat, the most calories from carbohydrates, the least cal from protein, and the 2nd most vitamins/nutrients.
Finally, here are the values of Ridges potato chips. These chips in all had 10 servings. Overall the Ridges had 1,500 calories, 10 grams of fat, 3 grams of saturated fat, 160 mg of sodium, 14 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of dietary fiber, and 2 grams of protein. After doing calculations, I got these results; Ridges had .06% calories from fat, .037% calories from carbohydrates, and .005% calories from protein. In comparison to the other items, Ridges contained the most nutrients, the most calories from fat, the second most calories from protein, and the second most calories from carbohydrates

The serving sizes listed are realistic but I usually don't eat the serving size. The serving sizes were alike except for the vegetable chips and the serving sizes affects the nutritional content because the less servings they give you than the "healthier" it is. The food that is the unhealthiest was the vegetable chips. The healthiest was the kettle chips.

Mariahs Food Analysis Project
The serving sizes are not very realistic at all, they tell you how many calories in bold print, then in small lettering underneath explain how much of the food makes up that amount of calories. An example would be if you looked at a bag of chips and it said 180 calories. You would assume it meant the whole bag. In reality thats not it at all. If you look underneath the amount of calories where it says serving amount you will something like 6 chips, meaning 6 chips=180 calories so the entire bag would probably be around 300. Yes, the differnce in serving sizes help explain their nutritional values. It shows that some food is more healthy than others because you can eat more of it and it will still be less calories.
No, not all the claims refer to the nutritional content. They may claim to have 30% of your daily fiber when it's really only 25%. I find the lying claims misleading. It's ot really lying, more of exagerating or rounding off. Say a box of pretzelscomes out to be 225 calories, the company may just round it off to 200 so people will think "wow, thats not a lot of calories, I'm going to buy this!"I learned that you can't always trust food labels. Alsoit was very interesing to see how similar the ingredients were for two of my products, and how similar the amount of fat, sodium, toatal carbs etc. were.

Radeks Food Label Analysis

FOOD ANALYSIS
Today I have learned many new things about the food i eat everyday. First of all i now know how much calories my body is breaking down every morning i eat my toaster struddle. Every kind of food is filled with a different amount of calories, grams fat, sodium, carbs, and protein. The food you eat determines the amount of each you get. some foods have more calcium then others, as well as vitamin a and vitamin c. The food we eat shapes the way our bodies are.
Every food has an appropriate serving size, which is basically the amount you should have within one serving. But do we really eat based off of what is says on the box? of course not. We usually eat until we are full. the manufacturer gives you the appropriate amount of food per serving, its up to us if we really listen. Some products are healthier per gram so the serving size will be a bit more. Most of the claims on labels are nutrition related. But some claims may be "natural fruit flavors". And sometimes it will read "will other natural flavors", it can be misleading because buyers look for words like natural or pure. Companies use those words to get buyers. My calculations support the product claims because for a claim like "artificial flavor" that product would have much more grams fat then a product that claims "natural flavor". The predominant ingredient by weight is sugar. When there are specific ingredients that clearly are more abundant then others they are usually stated first in the ingredients list. While the less important ingredients are listed closer to the end of the list. The Celeste was the unhealthiest as it was highest in calories, total fat, sat. fat, and carbs. The healthiest was the Fruit Rounds as it was the lowest in calories, total fat, sat. fat, and carbs.

The serving sizes listed on the food lables are realistic except for the Kashi. I say this because nobody is really going to count out exactly 28 pieces of cereal and it's not even a bowl full of cereal. Also nobody is going to really get full with only 28 pieces of cereal and milk in a bowl. The stated serving sizes is what i normally eat except for the Kashi cereal. I eat more then the serving size for the Kashi. The serving sizes are all the same except for the Kashi because its in a smaller amount than the Cheerios and Cornflakes. Since the Kashi shows a smaller serving amount it will make people think that it's healthier so more people will buy it instead of the other cereal. The only claims that I read was forn the Cornflakes which said fat free. I did not see any claim that was misleading. My calculations supported the claim for the cornflakes. Food Comparison Post
American's lives have become increasingly busy. Looking for jobs, trying to keep your job, school, and sports are part of American daily life. However, many of us rush around so much we miss the most important meal of the day: Breakfast. To make this meal more convenient, we have created things like cereal and Poptarts. These foods are quick and easy, and perfect for a quick meal for someone on the go. But how healthy are these foods? To see, I grabbed a box of Raisin Bran and a box of Double Chocolate Krave cereal, to compare how healthy they are when looked at side-by-side. I also checked out a box of Chocolate Fudge Poptarts, to see how these tasty treats measured up to the cereals.
All of these products are made by Kelloggs, a well known company. The first aspect of the foods we'll see is calories. Unsurprisingly, the Poptart is highest in calories, at 200 per serving. Oddly enough though, the Krave cereal is the on with the lowest calories, at 120 calories per serving, where Raisin Bran comes in at 190. The fat content is higher in Krave, with 3.5 grams, in comparison to Raisin Bran's 1 gram. Again, Poptarts are the unhealthiest, with 5 grams of fat. This puts 22.5% of Poptart's calories from fat, 25.8% for Krave, and 4.7% for Raisin Bran. Saturated fat content is relatively low in these foods, with 1.5 g in Poptarts, 1 g in Krave, and 0 g in Raisin Bran. All the foods had no cholesterol. Krave had the lowest amount of sodium, with 95 mg. This was followed by Poptarts, with 230 mg, and Raisin Bran was highest, with 250 mg. All the said foods were fairly high in carbohydrates, lowest being Krave, containing 23 grams. Poptarts had the second lowest, with 37 g. This mean that Poptarts had 74% of the calories from carbs. Krave and 76.7% from carbs, and Raisin Bran had 91.6%. Again, the Raisin Bran was the highest, with a large serving of 46 grams. This was balanced out by its high amount of dietary fiber, with 7 grams. Second was Krave, with 3 g, and bronze went to Poptarts, which was a measly one gram. The foods being examined kept this order for protein, with 5 g, 2 g, and 3 g, respectively. This means 3.5% of calories in Poptarts are from protein. Raisin Bran had 3.7% of calories in protein. They also varied in the vitamins contained in them. Poptarts had greater than or equal to 10% of daily vitamin intake in calcium, iron, and vitamin A. Krave had 10% in iron, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Raisin Bran had the least vitamin nutritional value, with 10% in only iron and vitamin A.
Poptarts claimed that it is cholesterol free, a good source of calcium, and a good source of 5 B vitamins. I have confirmed this as true. Krave says it has 8 grams of whole grains, and is a good source of fiber. This can be said as true, as well. Raisin Bran says it is heart healthy and an excellent source of fiber. The fiber claim is completely true, as I have shown above. These grains in the Raisin Bran also make it heart healthy.
Now for ingredients. Poptart's first ten ingredients are: Enriched flour, sugar, dextrose, soybean and palm oil, corn syrup, cracker meal, high fructose, corn syrup, cornstarch, and cocoa. Krave contains: Chocolate flavored filling, sugar, whole grain oat flour, whole wheat flour, rice flour, oat fiber, corn bran, caramel color, cocoa processed with alkali, and brown sugar syrup. Raisin Bran had relatively few ingredients, with less than ten. These ingredients are: Whole grain wheat, raisins, wheat bran, sugar, brown sugar syrup, salt, and malt flavoring.
For the cereals, the serving sizes are pretty accurate. With their serving sizes and milk, they can be filling when eaten with fruit and/or whole grain toast. Poptarts, however, are an issue. The serving size is a deceptive 1 tart. As we all know, Poptarts come in packages of two. This means all the sugar, carbs, etc. are doubled if you have a full packet. Now, to be fair to Raisin Bran, it has a 1/4 of a cup more in serving size than Krave. This does not make up for where it comes up short to Krave. The claims made by Kelloggs in all these products seem to be pretty fair. It appears that my calculations prove these claims correct. Though in some of these products, it seems as though they may not be as healthy as they claim, we can assume that in some of these cases, the products were fortified with some of the nutrients, as many modern food products are. Poptarts predominant ingredient is Enriched flour, Krave's is Chocolate flavored filling, and Raisin Bran's is whole grain wheat. The order of these products' ingredients mean that they are high in that ingredient, in that order. So when Raisin Bran has wheat for its first ingredient, it screams HEALTHY.
To sum up, it seems that Raisin Bran is best for grains and heart health, and contains the lowest amount of fat. Krave is better in calories, sodium, and has a lower amount of carbs. Poptarts are made purely for your convenience and are not very healthy. Overall, I think that the Raisin Bran is the healthiest. But it is not as good as bacon.

Eric's Food Analysis
For my food analysis, I chose Nutella, Hellmann’s
Mayonnaise, and General Mill's Cheerios. Out of the three foods, Mayo had the
least amount of calories (60), but had the most cholesterol (5mg). Nutella had
the highest amount of calories (200), but had 0mg of cholesterol. I say that
Cheerios is the healthiest out of the three, because it has 110 calories, 2
grams of fat, 0 cholesterol, and 21 grams of carbohydrates. Also, its main
ingredient is whole grain oats. Nutella is probably the second healthiest, and
than Mayo. Mayo has 5mg of cholesterol and 120mg of sodium.
The serving size for Nutella is 2 tbsp. I think people take more than this, so it isn’t a reasonable size. Mayo’s is 1 tbsp., and Cheerios’ is 1 cup. I believe these are reasonable sizes. There may be nutritional value in these foods, but if you take too much, than it is not good. These foods also contain claims, such as cheerios that says eating it will help prevent heart disease. This is true, because of the whole grain oats. If you want to know more, visit choosemyplate.gov.
Food Label Tricks
The food that I chose for this assignment are Hot Pockets, Turkey bacon and Cheetos twisted puffs. My calculations showed that Hot Pockets contained the highest amount of calories from fat at 108% . Hot pockets were also the highest in percent of calories from protein and carbohydrates both at 156% kcal. The turkey bacon was the healthiest food choice with 18% from fat, 0% calories from carbs and 0% calories from protein.
The serving size for the Hot pockets is one pocket which is realistic but I usually eat two.
The serving size for the turkey bacon is two slices which I don't think is realist, I usually eat five slices.
The serving size for the Cheetos is seven pieces which is unrealistic as I eat half a bag. :)
The difference in serving sizes do not really explain the nutritional values. The difference in serving sizes effects the nutritional contents of each item because the more portions in a serving size may decrease the nutritional value of the product. All the claims do refer to nutritional content, however some appear misleading as the Hot pockets and the Cheetos twisted puffs claim that they are made with real cheese when the ingredients prove that most of the "cheese" is artificial flavor. The calculations for the most part support the claims. As noted before the Hot pockets and the Cheetos twisted puffs claim that they are made with real cheese when the ingredients prove that most of the "cheese" is artificial flavor. For the Hot pockets the highest weight was sodium coming in at 630mgs. Same for the Turkey bacon coming in at 180mgs. Lastly, for the Cheetos the highest weight was also sodium coming to 300mgs, half of what the Hot Pockets were. The products list the ingredients in order from highest to lowest content.
Looking at my calculations, the Turkey bacon won the award for healthiest treat. YUMM. By far my beloved Hot pockets are sadly the losers, as they are the unhealthiest treat you could eat out of these three. The Cheetos however, are about half as healthy as the Hot pockets. So on the healthy scale Turkey bacon is number one, Twisted puffs are number two, and lastly Hot pockets are sadly number three.

The serving size is realistic on the food label. Yes, the serving size is the amount I normally eat, it is a full bowl of cereal. No, the difference in the serving size does not explain their nutritional values because they are all the same. No, the claims refers to what the cereal can only do to your waist so that you can fit your jeans. My calculations supported the product claims. The ingredients that support the product claim is the calories, total fat, saturated fat, dietary fiber, and protein. The predominant ingredient by weight is the total fat and saturated fat. The multigrain oats & honey is the healthiest cereal. The fruit & yogurt is the unhealthiest cereal.

The serving size for each food labels
is sometimes the amount I don’t normally eat. It could sometimes more or less
than that. The difference in serving size does not help with nutrition. It
depends on how much it nutrition values have on each of the food labels. For
special K it 45% Iron, vitamin a 15%, and 35% of vitamin c. As for the other
two they less nutrition than the special K. For those that have more nutrition
it doesn’t really matter how much you eat of it. But, for the others you can
tell how less nutrition they have because the results will show.
Between all the three foods the cereal
has the most nutrition. All though the popcorn is the second choice, not really
all the labels claim for nutrition value except the special K. For the claim it
says “Drop jean size in 2 weeks.” This give you the statement that you can be
healthy be eating this. For the popcorn and pizza rolls it can be missing
leading. The popcorn and pizza does not say anything about nutrition value in
the claims. It more talks about how delicious it is than talking about how
healthy it is. My calculations did support the special K’s claims. I would say
the main ingredients that support the claim is the vitamins and minerals. The
vitamin that is the most of the cereal is the iron. The reason for the order is
to see which vitamin or mineral you need the most.
Out
of all the three foods the special K cereal is the healthiest. That is because
of the most minerals and vitamins it has. The one that is the second healthy
choice is the popcorn; it has fewer calories then the Totino’s pizza rolls. The
popcorn and the pizza have barely any nutritional value. As for the serving
size it doesn’t really matter if you have less, the same, or more than for the
cereal. Whenever it has a high nutritional value you may be able to not have
the exact serving size. But, for those that are low having more that the
serving size intended could be very unhealthy.
